What’s Boudoir Photography?

Boudoir photography is a form of intimate portraiture that focuses on the natural beauty and sensuality of the subject. I say subject because while most boudoir clients are females, there are now boudoir photographers who photograph men*.

The photos are intimate, sensual, romantic and sometimes erotic looks at the subject in a private setting. The word “boudoir” means a private woman’s salon, dressing or sitting room. Many boudoir photos feature the subject in bedrooms, but settings have expanded over the years to include other areas of the home, outdoors or location shoots.

Boudoir photography is about more than beautiful images. The experience is designed to empower the subject by helping them step out of their comfort zone in a safe, supportive setting.

The shoot helps women with body-image issues or low self-esteem renew their confidence by seeing themselves in a different way. While some clients will have a boudoir session to create a unique gift for their partner, a surprising percentage have the sessions for themself.

What boudoir photography is not …

Boudoir photography is not pornographic. It is not women lying around is lingerie or nude for men to look at and fantasize about.

Yes, women may pose in lingerie or even nude, but those photos are meant for a private audience. If that is true, why do women give permission for boudoir photographers to share their boudoir photos online? To uplift other women and encourage them to take a step that will increase their sense of self-worth, self-love and self-confidence. Boudoir is about helping women feel beautiful and sexy. You don’t have to pose in lingerie or naked to do that. Every client has their own comfort level and style. A woman can feel sexy in an overcoat – it is more mindset than physical. So what is boudoir photography? It is part art, part therapy and a lot of fun. Boudoir helps women of all ages, shapes, sizes and colors find their beauty, sensuality and sexy again.

Why is boudoir photography so popular?

Boudoir is popular in part because over 80% of American women have body image issues. This is because of society’s influences that make them feel they are somehow lacking.

A boudoir photography session helps women on the path to body positivity, acceptance and self-love.

Boudoir is also a popular gift for women to give their partner or, in the case of bridal boudoir, future partner. An album full of their beautiful boudoir photos is a gift any man would treasure. Plus, his lady is the only one who can give it to him – he certainly can’t walk into a store and buy it!

Some women do the photoshoots for themselves to celebrate a milestone birthday, weight loss, or after breast enhancement or other surgeries.

As it has become more mainstream, more women are talking about the benefits of boudoir, which encourages more women to try it for themselves.
